At Barons, we have been shaped by more than 50 years of experience, innovation, and change. Since our beginnings as Dunn & Roberts in 1973, the world around us and the contract furniture industry have transformed considerably. But throughout that time, we've continued to evolve alongside our customers, adapting our products, manufacturing processes, services, and our brand to meet changing expectations.

Whilst a lot has changed, the principles behind what we do have always remained consistent. Quality craftsmanship, reliable service, and a commitment to creating furniture that meets the needs of the people using it continue to sit at the heart of what we do. As we look towards the future, we're building on that heritage with a modern approach that reflects both where we've come from and where we're heading.

Where it All Began

Our story starts back in 1973, when the business was originally established as Dunn & Roberts. The world looked very different at the time, as did furniture manufacturing. Computers, mobile phones, and the internet had yet to become everyday essentials, whilst manufacturing relied heavily on traditional processes and hands-on craftsmanship. Those traditional skills played an important role in establishing the foundations of the business. Furniture needed to be well made, practical, and built to last, and these are principles that remain just as relevant today.

Evolving Alongside the Contract Furniture Sector

Contract furniture has changed dramatically over the past 50 years, particularly within the care home and senior living sectors. Today's environments have to meet a much broader range of needs, with furniture playing an important role in supporting comfort, safety, independence, and wellbeing. Expectations around interior design have also changed. Care environments increasingly take inspiration from residential interiors, helping to create welcoming settings that feel less institutional and more like home.

Our furniture has evolved in response to this. Alongside comfort and performance, we carefully consider hygiene, ease of maintenance, and the demands placed on furniture through regular use. There is also an ever-increasing choice when it comes to design. With a growing selection of furniture styles, finishes, colours, and fabrics, our customers can create distinctive interiors without compromising on the practical performance required in a contract environment.

Our evolution has also seen us expand beyond our long-established presence in care homes and senior living. Building on decades of contract furniture expertise, we’re increasingly supporting customers across other sectors, including leisure and hospitality. This allows us to bring the same focus on quality, comfort, and thoughtful design to an even wider range of commercial environments.

Combining Traditional Craftsmanship with Modern Manufacturing

Although manufacturing has evolved significantly over the years, skilled British craftsmanship has always remained at the heart of how we produce our furniture. By maintaining control over the entire manufacturing process, we can closely manage quality at every stage and ensure each product meets the high standards our customers expect. Modern technology, improved materials, and efficient production methods now complement the expertise of our experienced team, helping us deliver even greater consistency and attention to detail. This combination of established craftsmanship and modern manufacturing capabilities allows us to continually evolve whilst remaining true to the quality that has defined us for decades.

The Transformation of Contract Fabrics

The fabrics available for our contract furniture provide yet another clear example of just how far we have come. Modern performance fabrics can combine attractive colours, patterns, and textures with practical features specifically suited to busy environments. Fire-retardant properties are essential for safety and compliance, whilst antimicrobial technology can help support infection control. Water-resistant and easy-clean finishes can also make everyday maintenance considerably simpler. These developments mean performance no longer has to come at the expense of appearance. Customers can create design-led interiors whilst selecting fabrics capable of meeting demanding performance requirements.

Changing Styles without Forgetting the Classics

Furniture trends inevitably come and go, and we've seen plenty of them throughout our 50 years. That’s why we've continually expanded and refreshed our collections to respond to changing tastes, introducing contemporary shapes, finishes, and upholstery choices alongside more traditional designs. However, evolution doesn’t always mean leaving the past behind, because some styles remain relevant because of their timeless appeal. Instead, by updating these established designs with modern materials and finishes, we ensure that they continue to feel fresh and remain suitable for modern interiors without losing their classic charm.

A Growing Emphasis on Sustainability

Sustainability has become an increasingly important part of how we operate and how the wider furniture industry is evolving. Today, environmental responsibility influences everything from material sourcing to waste management and recycling. At Barons, we continue to develop our approach by working with responsible suppliers, considering the lifecycle of our furniture, reducing waste, and exploring more circular ways of working.

A good example of this is our new recycling initiative with One Fylde. Their recycling team collects cardboard and soft plastics from our facility every two weeks, helping ensure more of our waste is repurposed and recycled rather than sent to landfill. The partnership supports our environmental goals whilst also creating meaningful work, development opportunities, and community involvement for the people One Fylde supports.

Technology: Changing How We Work

It's difficult to talk about the last five decades without considering the enormous impact of technology. Processes that would have been unimaginable when the company was founded are now part of everyday business. Digital communication allows us to work more closely with customers, whilst advances in manufacturing technology support greater accuracy, consistency, and efficiency.

Technology has also transformed how customers discover our furniture. Rather than relying solely on traditional methods, customers can now browse collections online, explore different services, learn about our manufacturing capabilities, and contact our team quickly. But despite all these advances, we still place great importance on personal service, because we believe that technology should make it easier to work with us, rather than replace the meaningful relationships that we build.

Bringing Our Furniture Directly to Customers

As our products have evolved, so has the way we help customers choose them. Our unique display van experience is one example of how we've developed our service around customer needs. It allows customers to experience our furniture, fabrics, and finishes firsthand without having to travel to us. Furniture is tactile by nature, and being able to sit in a chair, feel a fabric, examine a finish, and compare options can provide valuable reassurance before making a decision. Bringing that experience directly to customers combines the convenience expected from a modern supplier with the personal service we've built our reputation on.

A New Home in Leyland

Another major step in our evolution is the expansion of our Leyland operations. After outgrowing our long-standing Lytham St Annes head office and first Leyland site, we invested in the neighbouring unit at Leyland to create a larger, more modern facility that can support our continued growth. The expanded site brings together manufacturing, distribution, head office functions, and customer facilities in one location, helping to improve workflow, collaboration, and service. It also includes a dedicated showroom where customers can experience our furniture, materials, finishes, and design details firsthand with guidance from our team. This investment gives us the space and capabilities to build on more than 50 years of British manufacturing expertise whilst supporting the next stage of our journey.

A Refreshed Brand Identity

As we continue to grow, we recognised that our brand identity needed to better reflect the business we are today. Our refreshed identity brings a more contemporary look and feel to the brand, but we retain the same values that have defined us for more than 50 years. This refresh has given us a clearer way to communicate who we are, what we offer, and the experience customers can expect when working with us.

Over 50 Years of Experience, with More to Come

From Dunn & Roberts in 1973 to the present day, our evolution has involved far more than a change of name. We've witnessed huge developments in manufacturing, technology, materials, interior design, legislation, sustainability, and the sectors our furniture serves, and we've continued to adapt at every stage. Yet evolution doesn't mean forgetting what came before. Traditional craftsmanship still works alongside modern manufacturing. Long-established furniture designs sit comfortably beside newer collections. Personal relationships remain important even as digital technology makes communication faster and easier. Our evolution doesn't end here, either. Because with a consistent focus on the future, we’ll continue listening to our customers, investing in our capabilities, developing our furniture, and responding to the changing needs of contract environments.
