At Barons, product development is at the heart of everything we do, and as the needs of care, healthcare, and other contract environments continue to evolve, we believe our furniture should evolve with them. That means continually exploring new ideas, listening to our customers, and finding ways to enhance everything from comfort to performance, hygiene, and sustainability. Instead of simply introducing new products, real product innovation involves understanding the real challenges faced by our customers and the people who use our furniture every day, and then developing practical solutions that make a genuine difference. When refining existing products or creating something entirely new, every decision we make is carefully considered to ensure that our contract furniture and soft furnishings deliver the quality and performance that we are known for.

To give you a better insight into how seriously we take innovation, we sat down with our operations director, Andrew Wallis, for a Q&A session. From where new ideas originate to what happens behind the scenes during development, Andrew explains how we turn customer insight and industry knowledge into furniture designed for the changing demands of contract environments.

Innovation is a key focus for Barons. Why is continuous product development such an important part of the company's ethos?

“For us, product development is really about making sure we continue to respond to what our customers need, not just today, but in the years ahead. The environments our furniture goes into are constantly evolving. Care homes, healthcare environments and other contract settings have to balance the needs of the people using the furniture with practical considerations such as durability, infection control, ease of maintenance, and increasingly, sustainability. Expectations around design and comfort are changing too. People quite rightly want spaces that feel welcoming and homely, while still delivering the performance required in a demanding commercial environment. That means we can't simply stand still and rely on what has worked in the past. We continually look at how we can improve existing products and where there are opportunities to introduce something new. Ultimately, our approach to innovation is very practical. It's about understanding how people's needs are changing and developing furniture that helps our customers create better environments for the people they support.”

Where do the ideas for new products come from, and how do customer feedback and industry insight shape the development process?

“Some of our best ideas start with a conversation with a customer. They're the people using our furniture every day, and they understand the practical challenges of their environments better than anyone. Our teams are regularly speaking with customers and listening to their feedback — whether that's something they'd like to see improved, a particular challenge they're trying to solve, or a gap they've identified in the products currently available to them. That insight is incredibly valuable to our development process. We combine this with what we're seeing more widely across the sector. We look at changing design trends, developments in materials and manufacturing, regulatory requirements and the evolving expectations of residents, families and care providers. It’s important that we're not developing products based on assumptions. There needs to be a genuine reason behind what we create. By combining customer feedback with our own experience and industry knowledge, we can identify opportunities where a new product or a change to an existing one can make a meaningful difference.”

What does the journey from an initial idea to a finished Barons product look like?

“There's a lot that happens behind the scenes before a new Barons product reaches a customer. It normally starts by identifying a need or an opportunity. From there, we begin looking at how that idea could work in practice — considering everything from the design and materials through to comfort, durability, manufacturing and how the product will perform in the environment it's intended for. It’s very much a collaborative process. Different teams bring their expertise at various stages, and prototypes allow us to assess and refine the product before we move towards the finished version. Testing and attention to detail are particularly important. Furniture within care, healthcare and contract environments can experience significant daily use, so it's essential that we're confident in the quality and performance of what we're putting onto the market. At the same time, we're thinking about the person who will ultimately use the product: how comfortable it is, how it looks and feels within a room, and whether it genuinely meets the need we originally set out to address. We won't introduce something simply for the sake of having a new product. It has to meet the standards we expect from Barons and, most importantly, deliver something worthwhile for our customers.”

How does Barons' commitment to product development help customers create better living environments compared with what's already available on the market?

“The real measure of successful product development is the difference it makes once that furniture is in use. Depending on the environment, that can mean many different things. It might be creating a more comfortable and homely space for a resident, incorporating dementia-friendly design principles, making furniture easier to clean and maintain, improving durability or helping customers make more sustainable choices.

We also think about the people responsible for running these environments. If thoughtful product design can make furniture easier to maintain, extend its usable life or help a team make better use of a space, those operational benefits can be just as important. For us, it's about looking at the complete picture rather than developing furniture around one feature in isolation. A product has to look good, but it also needs to perform. It has to be comfortable, but it also needs to withstand the demands of its intended setting. That’s where our continued investment in product development really matters. We're always looking for ways to improve that balance and give our customers furniture that helps them create attractive, comfortable and practical environments without compromising on the quality and performance they need.”

Continuing to Innovate for Our Customers

As Andrew explains, successful product innovation starts with understanding the people and environments our furniture is designed for. By combining customer feedback with industry insight, our manufacturing expertise, and a thorough development and testing process, we can ensure there’s a clear purpose behind the products we introduce. It's an approach that allows us to build on more than 50 years of experience whilst continuing to look forward, and as expectations around care environments, sustainability, comfort, design, and performance evolve, we'll continue to explore how our furniture can evolve alongside them.

Ultimately, our goal is to create furniture that does more than look great, performing reliably in demanding contract environments, supporting the people who use it, and helping our customers create comfortable, practical, and welcoming settings.
